毎年、クリスマスに NORAD （アメリカとカナダが共同で運営する北米航空宇宙防衛司令部 (North American Aerospace Defence Command) がサンタクロースの旅を追いかける伝統は、1955 年に始まりました。当時、大手百貨店の「Sears」は、クリスマスシーズンに「サンタクロースに電話しよう」というキャンペーンを行なっていました。その広告に掲載されたサンタクロースへの直通番号が、実は間違っていて、なんとアメリカ中央防衛航空基地 司令官の Harry Shoup 大佐につながってしまいました。大佐は、突然かかってきた電話がペンタゴンでもホワイトハウスでもなく、小さな男の子だったことにに面食らったものの、すぐにユーモアたっぷりに、隊員たちにレーダーでサンタクロースの橇がどこにいるか調べさせたのでした。
